In order to become a high ranking Magister, one must pay an arm...literally. Crystals infused with raw power are embedded directly into the stump of the candidate's severed arm. Once firmly in place the crystal then rapidly grows, either yielding great and terrible power...or causing a painful death. Those lucky enough to survive the ordeal are a force to be reckoned with.
